2013 Coin and Chronicles Set - Theodore Roosevelt

Theodore Roosevelt -- Rough Rider, conservationist, and chief executive. These are just a few of the colorful sides of one of our most intriguing Presidents.

Roosevelt was a popular, hearty leader, and his rise to the presidency was swift. Born in New York City in 1858, he became a state assemblyman while just in his mid-20s. From there, he went on to serve as commissioner of the U.S. Civil Service Commission, commissioner of the New York City Police, and then assistant secretary of the Navy under President William McKinley. He served in the Rough Riders Regiment during the Spanish-American War and was elected governor of New York in 1898 and vice president in 1900. Less than a year later, after McKinley's assassination, he became our 26th President.
